Author Spotlight: Cynthia H. Wise

Who is Cynthia H. Wise?cynthia-wise

Cynthia H. Wise lives with her husband in Marietta, Georgia, where her series, The Marcel Experience, is centered. When she is not writing novels about the supernatural and the fantastic, Cynthia can be found with her husband, Cliff, their two dogs, Jake and Sadie, and their cockatiel, Sam.

What motivated you to write your first novel?

I had just gone to bed and during the in-between stage of awake and asleep, the slide-show of a movie began playing in my mind.  When it stopped, I jumped up and wrote an outline.  I had beginning, middle, and end within an hour.

What strange things do you do when you write? Do you listen to music? Watch television? Eat Cheetos?

Since I do most of my writing at night while it’s quiet, I’m usually wearing pajamas.  I used to snack until I began putting on weight.  Now I drink smoothies.  They’re full of good-for-me stuff.

What was your greatest challenge writing this story and how did you overcome it?

One challenge was never letting go of my dream as life moved forward and paths were chosen.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters in this book, who would you choose and what would you do?

I would love to spend the day with Sylvano.  He’s experienced so many people and places on his spiritual quest for knowledge.  I could learn all kinds of wonderful, mystical things from him.

What’s next for you and your writing career?

My current work in progress is Sifting Through Shadows, the third book in The Marcel Experience series.

What inspires you? Where do you get your ideas?

Inspiration can come from any number of sources – things you read, see, hear, and feel.  Then you ask ‘what if’, and let your imagination flow.

What is something you are not good at doing?

Math.  The basics are fine.  But when it came to the higher levels, they blew my mind.

What message do you want readers to get from reading the book?

Food for thought and the idea that there really is more out there that needs to be explored and accepted.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Reading.  I also enjoy traveling for new experiences and learning.

What is the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received?

Keep writing.  If you get stuck, put your work aside for the time being and read a book, or two, or three.

What are your favorite characters that you have created?

At the top of my list is Detective Mark Winward.  I love the way he thinks, his courage, his compassion, his sense of humor.  He’s someone I’d want on my side.  Next would be Robert Manning.  I find him an all-around interesting guy.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your teenage self?

Pay more attention to mama.  She’s your best friend and you don’t even realize it.  She really does know what she’s talking about.  And she’s a great listener if you give her the chance.
