Kandi J Wyatt is a wife, mother of five, teacher, artist, and author. In her free time, she enjoys writing fantasy stories, and drawing with graphite and colored pencils. Portraits are her specialty. What motivated you to write your first novel?

On a family Christmas vacation, I saw a sign for Three Mile Canyon. I envisioned a dragon spewing fire down a canyon. From that came Dragon’s Future. It was designed with very little planning. I wrote the story for my kids who were ages 7-13.

What strange things do you do when you write? Do you listen to music? Watch television? Eat Cheetos?

I listen to quiet music. I started out with solopianoradio.com, but then moved to amazon music for work and study, and recently I’ve found a YouTube playlist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N8sUccRiTA

What was your greatest challenge writing this story and how did you overcome it?

Dragon’s Future fell into place without much struggle until the very end. Then I struggled with the epilogue. For some reason, it wasn’t wanting to be written in comparison to the rest of the book which just flowed.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters in this book, who would you choose and what would you do?

Ah, I’d meet up with either Ruskya or Kyn. I actually wrote a short story where I did fall into their world and met Ruskya and his family. I was able to go to the Youngling Challenge and watched the dragon flight race. The story will be available to my newsletter subscribers in December or January after Dragon’s Posterity is published. If I met up with Kyn, I’d have a cup of tea with him and talk about herbs and learn from him.

What’s next for you and your writing career?

I’m working on finishing publishing the Dragon Courage series. After that, I will be publishing my very first novel, Journey from Skioria, an epic journey of a 10 year old girl who is lost to sea and finds herself on a river bank. Humanoid creatures of the forest find her and help her find her way back to civilization. I am working on The Road to Trust, an Ancient Egypt Christian Historical Fiction. It tells the story of Bennu, a scribe apprentice, and his best friend Kontar, a priest apprentice. Their life is thrown upside down when the gods seem to lose control of Egyptian life. Finally, I have a trilogy of life in Myrtle Beach, a town where sheep, cattle, and cranberries outnumber people. Mythical creatures begin to make their way into this ocean town. We’ll follow various teenagers as they must protect the creatures from their community and their community from the creatures.

What inspires you? Where do you get your ideas?

My readers inspire me. I hear their questions, and I want to answer them. The prequel of the Dragon Courage series came about by reading amazon reviews and talking with a fan who read Dragon’s Future.

Ideas come from anywhere—my husband, kids, students, readers. Honestly. Dragon’s Cure came about when my husband asked “What happens when a dragon rider doesn’t want to be a rider but the dragon has bonded with the person. I’ve had a student tell me exactly what I have planned for the second book of the Mystical Creatures of Myrtle Beach trilogy. What made it even more special, was it was the student that inspired the characters for that book.

What is something you are not good at doing?

I’m working on showing the reader and not telling. I’m not great at marketing. I’m learning how to market. So far, I’ve learned that it’s about relationships. For example, my postmistress. I went in to send swag to winners of a Facebook party. I chatted with her as we found the right size package. She has been a constant fan of my books and purchases each one as it comes out. It was a relationship of chatting that brought about the sale.

What message do you want readers to get from reading the book?

Each of the books has different messages. For Dragon’s Future it’s that family and friends are your best resource for getting things accomplished. It also is about staying true to what is best and good. Dragon’s Heir shows the struggle to balance justice with mercy. Dragon’s Revenge shows that revenge doesn’t bring about peace nor happiness. Dragon’s Cure has multiple themes—a warning about human trafficking and abuse, how to not be held in bondage by bitterness and finding the freedom of forgiveness. Dragon’s Posterity focuses on forgiveness and coming of age.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

In my limited free time, I’m helping my husband by being his photography assistant, drawing, and I’ve just recently picked up wire weaving. I took one class and am hooked on the art.

What is the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received?

The first draft will be messy and ugly, but there is a gem underneath it. Just spew your ideas on paper and then later work with adjusting and mining those gems.

What are your favorite characters that you have created?

I love Ruskya and Kyn from the Dragon Courage series. I also really love Chace and Harley from A Myrtle Beach Adventure. Arnhyder, a gryphon, is another favorite character. He shows up in a short story soon to be released in an anthology by Fellowship of Fantasy. His temperament is one of embracing adventure and jumping into it without even looking.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your teenage self?

Keep writing and believe in yourself.
