What kind of music do you like? What’s your favorite song?

Sometimes when the dragon tails slide across the floor of the caves, it sounds a bit like music. My oldest friend, Muuth, hand-carved a flute once and he sometimes plays it to cheer me up. Most of his music tends toward minor key with a lot of dissonant notes. My favorite song, though, will no doubt be the moan of murdered dragons after I run them all through with a pair of cleavers. Music to my ears.

 What is your favorite meal?

Bread with honey. How do they get the honey? I tried once and had nothing but bee-stings all over my backside for the trouble.

 Who is your hero?

My best friend, Patience. She isn’t like me, an awkward youngling. She knows what she wants and she goes for it. Expert swordswoman? Check. Palace physician? Check. She also knows the value of family and cares for her father, Ryrick, the way I wish I could care for mine.

What powers would you have if you were a superhero?

I would have the power to turn back time. Then I’d go back to the day when Adom murdered my family and I’d save them before any of it happened. I’d join the king’s army when I came of age, and I’d go hunting dragons for sport.

 What is your favorite book?

I had a worn tome about etiquette that I read from cover to cover once. Come to find out it was about one hundred and fifty years old and irrelevant in my present circumstances.

If you had a pet, what would it be?

A dragon egg. Dragon eggs are about the only type of dragon I am okay with. They are quiet. They do not make noise or mess. Most importantly, they will not eat me.

Where would you take your honey for a date?

I would take my honey straight to a piece of bread and eat to my heart’s content.

If you were going to a movie, what would you see? Who do you take along?

Rhydian Berrel and I would probably go see a movie such as “Reign of Fire” together. He would laugh throughout and talk about how much CGI there was. I would be taking notes. He would try to buy me popped corn from the concession stand, but I would remind him that we are not friends and I don’t require his financial assistance.

 Describe your perfect day.

A blue sky unmarred by dragon forms. An endless sea of green farmland without a hint of blackened terrain from a dragon scorching. Quiet, no people for miles. Also, no chores to do. I’d find a tree to lie under and eat bread and honey all day long.

 Meet Melody Steiner

Melody Steiner is a novelist, librarian, warrior woman, and a mother. She grew up in a home where science fiction and fantasy were staples of the imagination. Her earliest novels were written in elementary school and involved rocket ships to the moon, alien life, and gumdrop kingdoms at war with other invading candy nations.

Over the years, she found herself drawn to fantasy stories that empower female characters and particularly women of color. Currently, she’s based near Columbus, Ohio, along with her husband and the wild things they call “children.”

Her recent work, Slither, is a traditional fantasy about a young woman who is enslaved by a herd of dragons. You can find her at or on her author facebook page:
